It has been used for centuries for all sorts of chopping or hacking and, until recently, also as a weapon. Tha basic shape varies little and it is probably more utilitarian than cerimonial (...) Larger examples were used for chopping and hacking for centuries regionally by the Hutu, Tutsi, Rundi, Hima, Havu, Hunde, Shi, Fuliru and Lega.
